Independent Physicians Will Win

Independent physicians can deliver high-quality patient care, enjoy greater freedom and autonomy, and do so at a lower overall cost than their employed counterparts. Yet today, 74% of doctors work for hospital systems, private equity firms, or insurance companies.

One major reason for this shift is debt. The average physician graduates with over $240,000 in educational loans, making it difficult to take on the risk of running an independent practice. Adding to the challenge, independent doctors often face hurdles in acquiring patients and getting paid by insurance companies.

But change is coming. The pendulum is swinging back toward independence, driven by government opposition to consolidation, widespread physician burnout, loss of revenue to employers, and advances in technology that make running a practice more efficient.
